NOTE: The info listed on this page is for previous Data Link products. Current Data Link product information is available here.

Hardware Requirements

What kind of PC hardware do I need to operate the Timex Data Link watch?

All you need is an IBM compatible PC running Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later* and an external CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor. Chances are, you've already got the equipment you need.

No wires, cables, infrared ports, etc. are need when an external monitor is available. The Timex Notebook Adapter is available to send data to the watch from Notebook PC's that use LCD screens.

*The original Timex Data Link watch and the newer Ironman* Triathlon® version of the Data Link watch require the optional Timex Notebook adapter for use with Windows NT/2000.

Does the Timex Data Link watch and software work with Microsoft Windows NT/2000?

Yes. The Timex Data Link 150 should be fully compatible with MS Windows NT/2000 and 3.51. Use of the original Timex Data Link watch with MS Windows NT/2000 requires the optional Timex Laptop Adapter.

Will the Timex Data Link watch work with Apple Macintosh products?

No. The Timex Data Link watch and software were specifically designed to work with an IBM compatible PC and Microsoft Windows.

Timex is flattered by the positive reaction many Macintosh users have shown to the Timex Data Link Watch.

We appreciate your patience in this matter.

Will the Timex Data Link watch work with my Notebook computer?

The technology used in the Timex Data Link watch requires an external CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor or the optional Timex Notebook Adapter to transmit data. The watch cannot receive information directly from any LCD screen (including active matrix and TFT) because they do not emit enough light.

Of course, the Timex Data Link software will run on your IBM compatible notebook PC and data can be sent to the watch from an external CRT monitor or from the Timex Notebook Adapter.

What is the Timex Notebook adapter?

The Timex Notebook adapter is an LED device that connects to your 9-pin serial port. The adapter is compatible with all current Timex Data Link watch types and supported operating systems.

The adapter can also be used to provide compatibility with Microsoft Windows NT/2000 for the original Timex Data Link watch and the Ironman* Triathlon® watch with Data Link system.

Are there other products that use the Timex Data Link technology to receive data from the PC?

The Royal FL95 PDA is made by Royal Electronics

The Tiger PDA2000 is made by Tiger Electronics

Other vendors may license the technology for use in their products in the future.

How long will the battery in the Timex Data Link watch last?

When installed at the factory, the battery in the Timex Data Link watch is estimated to last 3 years. This estimate is based on: the INDIGLO night-light being used for 7 seconds per day, one data download per day, and two 10 second alarms per day. Battery life may vary depending on your actual usage.

It the Timex Data Link watch water-resistant?

Yes. The original Timex Data Link watch is water-resistant to 100 meters. The Timex Data Link 150 is water-resistant to 30 meters.

Remember: Water-resistance means that you should not press the watch buttons while it is under water.

The metal band that came with my Timex Data Link watch does not fit properly. Are other sizes available?

www.timex.com/html/data_link_software.html

Does the Timex Data Link watch and software work with Microsoft Windows NT/2000?

What are WristApps®?

WristApps are mini-programs that can be sent to and executed on the Timex Data Link 150 and 150s watches. The following WristApps are included with the Timex Data Link software, version 2.0 or later: chronograph, adjustable countdown timer, preset countdown timer, week of the year, and melody tester.

Click here for more information on an additional WristApps® package.

Is a software developer's kit available for the Timex Data Link system? What about WristApps and Soundthemes?

Timex has released a Software Developers Kit to help software developers incorporate the Timex Data Link system capability into their specific applications. If you are interested in incorporating the ability to download to a Timex Data Link product into your application, please contact our Technical Support Team at 800-328-2677 or 501-370-5782.

There is currently no SDK to allow software developers to make WristApps or Soundthemes. Timex does not have any publicly announced plans to produce an SDK for WristApps or Soundthemes.

Our developers have indicated that WristApp programming requires an extensive knowledge of the assembly language for the Motorola 6805 processor. A 6805 emulator is also required to debug the assembly language code. In addition to experience programming in 6805 assembly language and the requisite 6805 emulator, WristApp and Soundtheme development requires an intimate knowledge of the Timex watch architecture.

Entering Data

How much data can be stored in the Timex Data Link watch?

The original Timex Data Link watch will store up to 70 entries in any combination of the four databases. The four databases are appointments, anniversaries, phone numbers and to-do lists.

The Timex Data Link 150 watch will store up to 150 entries. Alarms, time settings, WristApps, and Soundthemes do not affect available memory.

The Timex Ironman* Triathlon® watch with Data Link system will store up to 40 entries.

What is considered one entry?

1 Appointment entry = Date + Time + 15 character message

1 Anniversary entry = Date + 15 character anniversary message

1 Phone Number entry = 15 character name and 12 character phone number

1 List entry = 15 character list item

The Timex Data Link 150 watch supports 31 character message lengths. However, there may be a tradeoff between number of entries and number of characters per entry. Memory in the Timex Data Link watch is allocated dynamically.

Can I enter information directly into the watch without a computer?

You can manually enter alarms (with eight-character message), time settings, and time zone code. All other information must be sent from the computer.

Can I append data to that already in the watch?

Every time data is sent to the watch all selected data is sent, replacing any previously stored data. This way the software can keep track of the amount of data that can be stored in the watch. If you would like to send data from two different locations (e.g., home and work), you must keep your data files updated between the two locations.

Can I send information from watch to PC?

It is not currently possible to send information from watch to PC. The Timex Data Link system is currently receive only.

Will the Timex Data Link watch work with other Personal Information Manager (PIM) software?

Yes. Timex Data Link software has been licensed and incorporated into Microsoft Schedule+ for Windows 95, Microsoft Outlook, and NetManage Ecco Pro 4.0 Other PIM's may incorporate the software in the future.

Can I import data into the Timex software from other PIM's?

Yes, the Timex Data Link software imports files in a CSV (comma separated value) file format. See the Timex Data Link Software help file appendices for detailed information on importing from other PIM's.

Can I export my data from the Timex Data Link software to Microsoft Schedule+ 7 or Outlook?

Because Microsoft Schedule+ 7 and Outlook provide direct compatibility for the Timex Data Link watch, there is no link between the Timex and Microsoft software.

Do appointments get deleted from the watch when they have expired?

Expired appointment entries will remain in the watch for reference purposes until you re-send data to the watch. When you send information, your new appointments will clear out the old ones and the next occurring appointment will display.

Of course, you can individually delete appointments on the watch by pressing the SET/DELETE button while an appointment is displayed.

How do I delete LIST entries from the watch?

List entries are marked DONE when the SET/DELETE button is pressed. To completely remove an entry, delete it from the software or disable the send option for that entry.

Is there any kind of security built into the Timex Data Link watch? I’d like to put my PIN numbers and credit card numbers in the watch but I don’t want others to be able to access those numbers.

Other than the watch being physically on your wrist, there is no security per se. However, if you use an entry in the Phone Number or List field, you could simply leave off the first or last number, enter it backwards, or disguise your information as some other type of data.

Alarms

How do I delete alarms from the watch?

The Timex Data Link software version 1.0c or later has an option to reset alarms to their default values. There are also options in the software to enable/disable each alarm.

The alarms can also be reset to their default values by completely resetting the watch. To reset the watch, press and hold both buttons on the left side for approximately 3 seconds.

Caution: This action will erase all data from the watch! Be prepared to re-send data before resetting the watch.

My original Timex Data Link watch had a daily, monthly and yearly alarm. Why was this feature removed from the Timex Data Link 150?

Because the Timex Data Link technology does not currently support a weekly alarm, our developers elected to remove the monthly and yearly alarms to avoid confusion.

We have received many requests that this feature be added back to future models and have made our developers aware of your comments.

What features were added when the model 150 and 150s were released?
